Lynden Washington is a city of 10,700 strong in the north central area of Whatcom County and is surrounded by farming land with rich sandy-loam soils. This proud community and it's Dutch heritage as the core, is one of the nicest communities in the Western Washington region. It was once said that Lynden, WA had more churches per capita then anywhere else in Washington State. Over the last 15-25 years there have been a lot of new comers that have moved to Lynden and it's surrounding areas. Just recently Lynden was reconised as the fastest growing city in Whatcom County.
Lynden is not broken down by any designated neighborhoods by the City of Lynden, but I would say there are distinct communities within the city of Lynden.
In describing Lynden and it's communities I would have to start at the core of this great community in it's downtown area. What a beautiful area of town with all of it's heritage and the over all dutch influence in the architecture and presentation of the streets and buildings. Around the downtown area one can find a lot of shopping, restaurants, boutiques and lots of miscellaneous business.
Surrounding the downtown area are the homes of the Lynden community. Some built after the turn of the century, but most built from the 1940's to 1960's. Like all of Lynden, these homes and yards are well maintained and show the pride of ownership of living in Lynden.
To the North of the downtown area is the newer Homestead Golf Course and it's large array of housing choices from condominiums, town homes, single and two story homes to luxury homes on a championship style 18 hole golf course. Most of the newer construction that has occurred in the last 10-15 years has been to the north of Main Street. Most of this land had formerly been farming land, and now it's slowly being converted to Lynden communities.
There is also some areas near Lynden High School where a lot of new homes have been built over the last ten years. Most of the homes to the west of downtown Lynden are older more traditional Lynden homes that have been well maintained. As you get closer to Guide Meridian though, the homes start to get back to being newer built ones again.
For someone visiting Lynden for the first time, I think they would get the sense that the town has really thought out it's growth through proper planning and it shows.
